Master's Thesis at Basrah University Examines the Phenomenon of Poverty in Iraq (1963-2003): A Socio-Historical Study

A master's thesis in the Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Basrah, examined the transformations of the phenomenon of poverty in Iraq during the period 1963-2003 – a socio-historical study.

The thesis, submitted by student Hussein Hajjo Mari, aimed to illustrate the social reality in Iraq and the extent to which it was affected by the unstable political situation, which exacerbated poverty despite Iraq possessing considerable material resources that should place it among the developed nations.

The thesis also addressed the phenomenon of poverty in Iraq and its connection to the changing political contexts that Iraq witnessed over those decades, as poverty in Iraq was linked to those major political changes and their impact on social conditions. The study examined the course of political events in Iraq and their impact on social conditions and the exacerbation of the poverty phenomenon. 

The thesis recommended, due to the impoverishment of Iraqi society left by the war policies of the eighties and nineties, the necessity of keeping the economic and living conditions file separate from any political disputes or conflicts.
